Letter to University Professors Stop Failing Us

Letter to University Professors Stop Failing Us Dear esteemed professor: For many years I was conditioned to think I had to go to college to be successful.   All of my pre-college schooling was geared towards getting into a college or university, which of course would get me into a good job.   I would make more than the undereducated, according to my high school teachers.   I would have a more comfortable job (white collar, heaven forbid I did anything blue collar(more on that later)).   I dont remember but maybe I would even live longer.   I certainly would have job security, just like my parents had. To be honest, I didnt really go to college to learn.   I can do that on my own.   Back in the olden days I would just get books from the library and read good magazines and newspapers.   Now I can educate myself using Google, YouTube and subscribe to various industry or association continuing education opportunities.   Not to mention there are a ton of self-proclaimed experts who give out so much information for free on the Internet that I dont have enough time to go through it all. For me, going to school was not about learning.   It was about being prepared to be (and survive) in the workforce. It didnt help that most of the material presented in the classroom was outdated, or for a setting I wasnt going to be in.   I remember an MBA ecommerce class, taught by a marketing professor who didnt know how to spell ecommerce he had no interest in current ecommerce issues, only in teaching the lists from his undergrad marketing classes.   What a shame.   It was my first MBA class and it really deflated my expectations of how much better the MBA program would be from the undergrad. So, understanding where I am coming from, let me assume (I know, I know) what you are there for.   You want to impart on me your knowledge and wisdom from your area of expertise.   Whether its anthropology, economics or outdoor recreation, you want me to be that much smarter in that area.   Im cool with that.   I am interested in expanding my mind and vision I just beg you to make it interesting and not do a book report of what I had to read for homework, okay? But more than that, I have something I really wish you would do.   Its too late for me, since Im done with the formal education, but I would like ask you do this for the people I care about, whether they are in school now or whether they will be in 15 years (my kids).   I really wish you would take a few class hours during the semester and have frank, candid career discussions. Here are some ideas: Tell me what I can expect when I get out of school. Tell me what the value of an internship is and strongly encourage me to get a real internship. Tell me what you love about your career, and what your friends in the industry do, how they got there, etc. Bring professionals into class so they can share their stories with us.   Bring recent grads in so they can tell us what its really like. Teach us what networking is, how to network, and why and when we should network. Teach us about personal branding, what it is and why we need it. Any chance you can bring the career services folks into the picture?   It seems like there is a brick wall between you and career services I dont care why, but I would like to know if there is value in the career services offices. Im obviously not asking you to step away from all of the great stuff you prepared for the class, but please bring some career management stuff into the discussion.   The more open and candid you are, the more interested well be, I promise it. Oh yeah, not to be demanding, but I have one more request.   Dont just talk about it (although that would be a 1,000% improvement from what other professors are doing), but LIVE IT.   I want you to network, and be well-networked.   I want to be able to google your name and see your brand on-line.   Between sessions Id like to know you are out consulting, or volunteering, or somehow staying current in the industry. If I come to you requesting job search help, you should be able to give me some leads, because you have been nurturing relationships.   Whether you give them to me or not will depend on our relationship, and whether you trust Ill treat them right or not but please develop and nurture those relationships!   You need to teach us how to do that, and it really should come from your experience. Thats it. Jason Alba Just some guy P.S. Sorry for all my smart alec remarks during my many years of school. I know I was a bad student. P.P.S. Not everyone agrees with me.   Heres some feedback I got from some of my network (first my question): Here are my the responses I got: I must end on this note.   I didnt write this to offend or degrade professors, rather the system they are in. What Are You Missing - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

What Are You Missing - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career From the moment you wake up, opportunities are staring you in the face. So why are you missing out on them? Why are you missing out on the job promotion thats available, the openings at the companies you admire, and the business opportunities even the investor who is staring you in the face? You just arent paying attention to the rich opportunities that are in your environment, both online and on-ground. You are too busy doing your job, looking for a job, texting, gossiping, browsing the web, or trying to manifest what is already all around you. Here’s what we know from neuroscience, as noted in the Journal of Current Biology. Each night while you sleep, your brain is busy sorting, connecting and filing away everything your senses took in during the day. Often you’ve taken in volumes more from your environment than you consciously appreciated. Its only when you sleep, that your brain processes all the information you missed, plus makes connections with the interests and skills you have. There are so many valuable, enriching, perfect opportunities presented in the average day of the average person â€" you could not possibly take advantage of all of them. But among the wealth of opportunities, there are at least a dozen during the average week that connect perfectly with your interests, goals, desires and skills. You are missing what you are looking for, because you are busy “looking.” Looking through the ads on LinkedIn, looking at lists on job boards, looking at YouTube, looking at Instagram, looking at other people at Starbucks, or looking into your smartphone. But real opportunities you consciously missed have been taken in and stored by your brain. At night, your brain sifts through everything you saw, heard, felt and experienced â€" that you were not even aware of â€" during your day. How can you access what your brain has stored? Your brain will present the perfect opportunities to you, if you: Set your brain on autopilot  each night. Before you go to bed, make a list of three things you want, that will help you move forward in your career or business. I call that list your Big 3. That helps direct your brain to search and effectively use the material it’s storing in your mental “filing cabinets.” One of the five big jobs your brain takes on when you sleep is decision-making. By reciting your Big 3 list aloud, you are giving it instructions about how to make decisions for you. Just be very specific. Such as: Find me a great new employer, with doggy day care onsite and free lunches. When you deliberately set your brain on autopilot, you create an opportunity recognition system. You control your selective perception, so your brain knows exactly what you want not just while you are asleep, but all through your waking day. What are you missing? Actually nothing. You just need to direct your attention to the opportunities that are hiding in plain sight. When you intentionally activate your selective perception, opportunities arrive. Even better? You see them!

How to Handle Rejection During Your Job Search - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

How to Handle Rejection During Your Job Search - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Running a recruiting firm, I come across many job seekers who have simply “had it” and, via a tremendous amount of interviewing rejection, give up on their job search. However, there are more effective ways of going about handling rejection and overcoming obstacles during one’s job search in hopes of getting that job that you want. Here are just a few ways how to handle rejection during your job search: 1. Try to figure out the causes for this rejection â€" Many times, our headhunting agency sees that constant rejection during the interview process spawns from nothing more than the interviewee going for open positions that are out of their skill-set, thus putting them at a disadvantage right off the bat. Either way, until you recognize where the problems are and why you are getting rejected, improvement is going to be near impossible. Step away for a moment and think about the reasons why you’re not interviewing up to snuff and simply correct it. 2. Make sure that you remain resilient â€" While taking a break is a great thing, giving up is a terrible way to end a job search. Just like in anything in life, you’re going to encounter ups and downs, however it’s how we handle those downs which differentiates us from those who are not as successful. Running my recruitment agency, I have to deal with many career setbacks, though I have come to the conclusion that giving up solves nothing and resiliency and consistent hard work always does the trick. In business and in getting a job, going through the necessary motions and making sure that you do the right work pays off. 3. Keep a positive attitude â€" While our normal response is to become negative and lose self-confidence in ourselves, this is the last thing that is productive and can only worsen the problem. Keeping a positive attitude means that you don’t take everything personally, make sure that you smile and know that next time is a new interview and past rejections are simply in the past and should remain there. Additionally, keeping a positive attitude means envisioning you getting the job that you want as until we picture success, it is harder to know what we are after. You must believe that good things will happen. 4. Maintain strong self-confidence â€" Don’t define yourself by the rejection that you are seeing during the recruitment process. Getting turned down for jobs doesn’t mean that you’re a loser or possess any less worth than other individuals. Make sure to separate your feeling of yourself and the ability to interview well. To have a stronger self-confidence, you must come to the realization that you don’t need anyone else to complete you, nor do you need to depend on these interviewers to make you happy. In the End Keep on improving yourself and believe that the work you’re putting in will benefit you, and in time (rather, when it is time), you’ll find the job you want. Using a Resume Scanning and Analyzing System For Writing

Using a Resume Scanning and Analyzing System For WritingWriting ML based resume scan and analyzing systems is one of the most important techniques to be known in the job hunting arena. It has long been a part of the job hunting process, that if you don't do the scanning and analysis yourself, you can hire the right resume writers to do it for you. However, if you feel that you don't have enough knowledge or skills to write resumes, you can always hire someone to do the scanning and analysis for you. Read on to discover how to go about this.ML based resume scanning and analyzing systems are a group of strategies and methods that most recruiters use to check your previous work experience, skills, or knowledge and find out if they match with the company needs. Of course, every company doesn't follow the same hiring procedure, and thus the need for different strategies and methods. Recruiters do carry out basic checks on a candidate's resume. However, this is just the basic form of the b asic resume scanning and analysis. It is also important to keep in mind that MLs scanning and analyzing methods are never perfect. There will always be room for improvement. The method of choosing a candidate is very important, and it is the most important thing for the company to consider. You should know what kind of person will best fit the job description. The nature of the job description is also very important. If you already have the requirements or qualifications then it's important to explain them and show the skills that would match with the company requirements. But, if you still need to show and justify yourself and other information, it will still help to have a copy of the requirements or specifications. But, the other way around is possible. It is also very important to understand that when it comes to MLs scanning and analyzing the information you have, you still have a lot of challenges. You might be good at the evaluation part, but there is some information that you s till have to show in your resume. You might not have all the necessary details on them but if you are aware of it, then you can still use it to your advantage. When it comes to writing MLs scanning and analyzing, you should focus on more than just the criteria required for the job. You should make sure that you have updated the information on the job, which might be different from the requirements. You should also take into consideration the expected format of the resume. There is no doubt that the requirements are going to be specific, but what you need to remember is that they are also for the purpose of making sure that the resume matches with the requirements. This is what the template is all about. When it comes to templates, these can be used to replace the specific requirements. MLs scanning and analyzing will help you if you have a good template and if you have updated your information and specified the job requirements. It would be extremely hard to write a MLs scanning and a nalyzing when you do not have a template and if you do not know the job requirements. So, you should be sure to take all these factors into account. However, you should also make sure that the template you have chosen will have all the information you need to make the most appropriate style for the requirements. And, once you have the job requirements, it is also important to match them up with the information you have. It will be easier to decide if you have all the information that you need to make a perfect MLs scanning and analyzing if you already have the requirements written down.

Technological Ignorance Could Be Killing Law Firms

Technological Ignorance Could Be Killing Law Firms Technology has been one of those explosions that has seen the majority of industries rejoice at the new-found freedom, adaptability, and ease of operating tech has given them. But this sense of happiness hasn’t transcended across all business-types, as the legal sector proves. For many law firms, there is a feeling of fear their age-old, traditional and (dare we say) archaic practice is under threat. But it’s not the technology they should be worried about, it’s being slow in their adoption of tech that will be the real competition divider. Not all lawyers are going to follow every new technological trend. We get that. However, understanding the trends is absolutely essential if they are going to remain competitive. So, without further ado, here are some top technological trends within the legal field and, even more importantly, how you should be using this tech: 1) Budgets Made Better A huge part of part of planning amongst law firms is being able to budget effectively, which is something technology encourages by helping firms become more proactive. It’s about moving away from the break-fix mentality that so many of the older professions still have. 2) Train Them In Tech While a good craftsman never blames his tools, it’s pretty darn important to accept a piece of technology is only going to be as effective as the person using it, which is why there has been a growing interest in training over recent years. As one study pointed out, when technology “fails”, it’s very rarely the technology that’s the issue. As such, training your employees on how to use the latest tech should become a major part of your development process and onboarding procedures. 3) Law On Cloud Nine For those that still haven’t got their heads around the whole cloud computing thing; instead of storing software (or anything) on a device, you store it on the internet. This is incredibly useful for the legal industry for so many reasons, as you can see for yourself by reading this article on http://www.enteracloud.com/solutions/solutions-for-legal/. It’s not just about maintaining your IT infrastructure, or having your data backed-up, or adding an additional layer of security to your operation; it modernizes the legal industry by allowing employees to operate remotely. That means increased productivity and decreased ‘dead-time’. 4) Matter Of Security Believe it or not, a recent study shows law firms are surprisingly weak when it comes to the matter of security. We’re talking 25% of firms having no security policies while less than 50% of firms use encryption devices to protect their files. The most common worry of all, though, is firms allowing employees to use their own devices, which not only adds responsibility to the individual but leaves firms at risk. To counter this and protect yourself at a time when data-protection is such a hot-topic (thank you Cambridge Analytica), it is so important your firm increases its security across the board, which can be done very easily by speaking to an IT services company.
